Zelta Marlene Koenig (Brooks), of Enderlin, died Monday, April 18, 2024.
Zelta Marlene Marsh was born at home in Oakport Township, MN in a log cabin, on May 10, 1933 to Benjamin Franklin (Frank) and Gladys Mae (Stokes) Marsh and was raised in Breckenridge and Detroit Lakes.
She was born during a rare and fierce May blizzard and her life was never without adventure, excitement and new projects. It was a signature beginning for her. After high school she attended Saint Johns Nursing School in Fargo, ND. After college she enjoyed traveling and camping with her family, including working as a camp nurse at Red Willow Bible Camp and a 3-month road trip to Alaska.
She lived and worked in Beulah, Valley City, Wahpeton and Fargo and retired from the Fargo VA Hospital after caring for our veterans. She was patriotic and was a lifetime member of DAV, VAVS, AMVets, and was a member of daughters of the American Revolution.
In September of 1954 she married Larus JW Thomasson from Drayton, ND. They had five children together. Ann, Kris, Karen, Mark and Joan. Karen survived only a few weeks and the rest of her children are still living. She later in 1978 married Robert Koenig from Woodworth, ND and spent 30+ years with him. They owned paint horses and went to antique shows and auctions. Robert was a disabled veteran and she took care of him with her nursing skills.
Zelta was a very warm, kind and fun person. You rarely saw her without a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She glorified God in everything she did. She was very diligent in devotion and prayer for herself and the world. She had a way of being attentive to other people’s needs and emotions and she did not hesitate to reach out a helping hand when she saw a need.
Zelta loved to decorate and brought beauty and order to her environment wherever she was.
Zelta was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. She is also the last of eight children to be called home to heaven. Preceding her were her siblings, Edward Marsh, Elvira Branstner, Marcella Chase, Beverly Sundvall, Darlene Hauschild, Alfred Marsh and Ida Mae Lasick.
She is survived by her children Ann Thomasson, Enderlin, ND, Kristin (Larry) Doerr Buffalo Lake, MN, Larus Mark Thomasson, Philippines, Joan (Paul) Smithey, Kansas City, KS and her grandchildren who are honorary pall bearers. Zelta is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly. She will be missed.
