Ted Schmidt Obituary

Ted Schmidt, 92, West Fargo, ND died on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018 at the VA Hospital in Fargo.

Theodore Fredrick Schmidt was born Feb. 9, 1926 in Billings, MT to Fredrick and Margaret (Rast) Schmidt. He grew up in Montana and enlisted in the US Navy at age 15. While in the Navy he was assigned to the USS Anzio CV 57 class aircraft carrier and served as an aviation mechanic and 40mm gunner.  He served in the South Pacific during WWII providing air cover when Marines went to take land and also on submarine patrol.  Ted earned the Navy silver campaign star.   He reenlisted in the US Army and served during the Korean War. While in the Army, Ted joined occupation forces from Italy to the Philippines. He served as a mechanic and truck driver and earned three Army bronze campaign stars.  He earned numerous medals from both branches of the military and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1952. Ted married Bernice Rominsky on May 22, 1954 in Fingal.  The couple lived in California for a time.  Bernice and Ted returned to North Dakota living in Valley City where he operated Ted’s Transfer. They then moved to West Fargo. He drove over the road for Raymond Cossette Trucking. He was proud of his 55 years driving truck to never have an accident or a traffic citation.

Ted enjoyed history and sharing stories of the war. He loved reading and cherished time with his grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his two children,  Curtis (Shanda)  Schmidt of Moorhead, MN and Denise (Stephen) Sharp of Springfield, Ohio; grandchildren: Tyler Schmidt,  Kallie Schmidt,  Katherine Sharp and Wesley Sharp;  nieces and nephews:  Becky (Ron) Prasek, Ollie (Jerry) Johnson, Kolleen (Charles) Sunde, Bill (Cate) Coghlan, Lynda (Tom) Day, Carol (Don) Kropp, Kathy (Rich) Eggert, Chuck (Jerrilyn) Coghlan, Toots Coghlan, Maureen Woodbury, Tim (Carol) Cruff, Mike (Joanie) Cruff, Sheryal (Arlo) Mittleider, Dalene (Jack) Van Eaton, Rita (Gary) Molldrem, Marle (Lisa) Poehls, Tammy Schultz, Stacy (Rodney) Welles, Mike (Michelle) Schmidt and Jody (Vicki) Schmidt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bernice in Sept. of 2017; and five siblings, three sisters, Elenora Coghlan, Mildred Poehls-Olsen, Benora Cruff and two brothers, Erv Schmidt and Jerry Schmidt.

Special thanks to Karen and Kenny Berg for all the years of being much more than a neighbor, and for the friendship and support they provided unconditionally. Also thanks to the Fargo VA for all the care that they provided Dad over the years.

Funeral: Monday, Nov. 19, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Maple Sheyenne Lutheran Church, rural Harwood, ND with visitation one hour prior.

Burial: Fargo VA National Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the West Fargo VFW and earmarked for helping veterans and their families.
