Richard Paulson Obituary

Richard L. Paulson, 88, of Clark, SD, died Monday, June 8, 2020, at the home of his daughter, in Horace, ND.  Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2020, at United Methodist Church in Clark, SD, with Pastor Mark Tracy officiating.  Immediately following the service, burial for Richard and his wife, Karen, who died June 11, 2018, will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery at Watertown.

The service will be live streamed on the Clark/Garden City United Methodist Church Facebook page.  Masks or face coverings are required. CDC guidelines and social distancing measures will be followed.

Richard LeRoy Paulson was born February 6, 1932 at Isabel, SD, the son of Charles and Alice (Fischer) Paulson. At a young age the family moved to the Clark County area settling on a farm site near Crocker. He attended the Mallard Slough School and then the Round Lake School. Richard farmed until serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He returned home and farmed until retiring. He married the love of his life, Karen Elmore and was married for over 56 years. They established their home on the family farm north of Clark. Karen Paulson died June 11, 2018.

He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, music, spending time with family and friends, attending basketball, softball, baseball and other sporting events and activities of his children and grandchildren throughout the years. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting deer, geese, pheasants and hosting hunters. As a young boy, the family hosted St. Louis Cardinals baseball player(s). Thus, Richard became a life-long fan and did not miss many games in his retirement. Richard was a kind and generous person that has helped many throughout the years. He loved to joke around and ‘tease’ people with a serious look, however, would soon follow with a wink and a big smile.

Richard is survived by his children: Doug (Kimberly), Dean (special friend, Bobbi Horton), all of Clark, SD; Julie (Evan) Holmen of Horace, ND; son-in-law, Todd Fuerstenau of Watertown, SD; eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Alma Paulson of Columbia, SC; nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his wife: Karen; daughter: Connie Fuerstenau; parents; step-mother: Mary; sisters: Shirley(Lude) Larson, Jeanette Rafferty , Alyce Dee Brammer and Lorraine (Mo) Zeck; brothers: Charles, Jr. "Buzz", Everett (Blanche), Darrel (Cleo) and Omar “Corky” Paulson.
