At the age of 70, Neil Swen Netterlund died following a year-long struggle with cancer. Neil was born in Greenbush, Minnesota, on November 16, 1950, to Swen and Nanna Netterlund and raised in Stephen, Minnesota. He went to Thief River Falls Technical College to study drafting after graduating from high school. He was hired as an electrical draftsman by KBM, Inc, an engineering firm, in 1970.
Neil was drafted into the US Army in 1971. Neil served his country in Vietnam as a courier. He was discharged from the army in 1972 and returned to KBM, where he formed many of his lifelong friendships. Miss Bonnie Byzewski, the "apple of his eye," was hired at KBM in 1974. He scheduled a ski night in Arvilla, ND on February 14, 1975, and asked her if she was going and if she wanted to ride out with him. From then on, the two of them were inseparable. They married on October 7, 1978, after a three-and-a-half-year courtship.
Sadie, their daughter, was born in 1981. In 1982 they moved to Fargo and Neil was “Mr. Mom” for four months before starting employment at Ulteig Engineers. Mitchel was born in 1983, after they bought a house in West Fargo. In 1984 Neil went back to work for KBM in Grand Forks. Working 10 hour days, four days a week would be temporary so he could be home with his family. But 30 years later and many miles driving he retired from KBM.
Neil and his family camped on Leaf Lake for nine years and in 1998 built a new home in West Fargo. His son and daughter both graduated from college, married, and dubbed him "Grumpa” after having kids.
Neil was a member of the West Fargo VFW and Atonement Lutheran Church. Neil enjoyed riding his motorcycle, attending car shows, taking care of his lawn, and tinkering in his garage. Being at home and spending time with Bonnie after retirement kept him happy.
Neil is preceded in death by his parents. Neil leaves behind his wife Bonnie, daughter Sadie (Josh) Twite and son Mitchel (Amy) Netterlund, grandchilden Alyssa, Caleb, Micah, Judah and Betsy, a brother Marlan (Diane) Netterlund, and two sisters Sylvia (James) Matthiae, and Marilee (Phil) Watland, many nieces and nephews and extended family.
