Kermit Harmon Obituary

Kermit Harmon, 94, of Park Rapids, MN, died on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Kermit Dean Harmon was born on May 4, 1927, in Hunter, ND, to Lamott “Mott” and Dora (Thomas) Harmon.  He grew up in Hunter, and graduated from Hunter High School in 1946.

On October 23, 1949, he married Jean Madsen in Hunter.  Following their marriage, they lived in Fargo, San Jose, CA, and Round Lake, MN.  He worked at Berg Fargo Motor Supply from 1951-1989, retiring in 1989, when they moved to Potato Lake to retire, living there for 32 years.  They also wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 32 years.

Kermit always had a little saying or quip about things.  He loved hunting, fishing and boating, and also playing pranks, gags, and collecting novelties.  He also enjoyed playing cards, and loved to play cribbage with his granddaughter Kristine and his parents-in-law.

Kermit was an active member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids, where he served as a volunteer in many capacities, including cutting turkeys and delivering meals.  He was also active in the Park Rapids Lions Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Loyal Order of Moose where he served as Governor of the lodge.  He also worked with muscular dystrophy for 15 years.

Kermit was an excellent driver and raked 20 bags of pine needles in a week during the month before he passed.  He was physically active in many other ways, including being an avid deer and antelope hunter, and arborist—if he cut down one tree, he would plant two!

Kermit is survived by his wife of 72 years, Jean; grandchildren, Reade (Rachel Mays) Thompson of MI, Kristine (Alex) James of SC; great-grandchildren, Michael, Kenny, and Bryant; and a sister, Evelyn Johnson.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Debbie in 1952, and Connie (Harland) Thompson in 2020; and siblings Allie, James, Frank, Cecil, Leon, Etta Glew, Gladys Brekke, Marion Piper, Loren, and Dora Smith.

Per the family's request, please do not send flowers.  Instead, please send memorials to Riverside United Methodist Church, Park Rapids Lions Club, or Meals on Wheels, all in Park Rapids, MN.
