Jim was born August 11, 1946 to Nick and Anna (Neumiller) Kautzman on the family farm south of Carrington, ND. He was baptized at home on the 29th day of January 1947. His education started and ended in Carrington where he lived until moving out to California in 1966 where he started his job at North American Aviator and made his home with his brother Wes for several years.

Jim returned to West Fargo where he worked for W.W. Wallwork, Chesley, and K&K Construction before retiring in 2015.

In 1974, he married the love of his life Ramona (Berger) in Hettinger, ND. They started their life together in Valley City and moved to West Fargo in 1979. Jim and Ramona were inseparable. That is the day that a huge part of Jim also left this world, it was very devastating for him. He was lonely and found it hard to cope without her.
