James Stein

James Douglas Stein, West Fargo, N.D., passed away January 3, 2019, after a two-year battle with cancer.

Jim was born May 15, 1952, in Fargo, and spent most of his early years in Moorhead. He attended St. Joseph’s School and Moorhead Public Schools. Jim made a lasting impression on his teachers and fellow students for his quick wit and following the beat of his own drum. During the 1960s, Jim discovered the music of artists such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and his life-long favorite, Pink Floyd.

By the time he was 25, Jim had lost both his parents, which had a deep impact on his life.

Jim later married and had two children, Amy and Jason. While there were good years, Jim succumbed again to dependencies. Later, after his children became adults, Jim was able to re-connect and bond with his kids and grandkids, who loved him dearly. Several health issues followed him later in life, including the cancer that eventually took him away from his loved ones.

Family members and friends remember Jim as an intelligent, well-read, and caring soul who deeply loved his kids and grandkids. He loved following the Vikings and Twins, which in turn led to understandable bursts of profanity.

Jim is survived by his children, Amy Jo (Russell “R.J.”) Sunderland and Jason Stein, West Fargo; grandchildren Keianna Stein and Bradon Brubaker, West Fargo, Kaura Asplund, Fargo, August “A.J.” Stein and Chloee Hahn, both Moorhead; and a great-granddaughter, Aubrey Gajkjen, West Fargo. He is also survived by his siblings, Susan (Carl) Wannemacher, Perham, Michael (Lisa) Stein, Moorhead, David (Reta) Stein, Moorhead and Carol (Steve) Ganser, Fargo.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Almira Stein, and a grandson, Ian.

Visitation: Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 1 until 2 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND.

Memorial Service: Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 2 PM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND.
