Eleanor Paulson DeTienne Obituary

Eleanor Paulson DeTienne, age 102, of West Fargo, ND, died Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo, ND.

Eleanor Alpha Haugen (and her twin brother, Elder) was born August 29, 1917, in Kindred, ND, the daughter of August and Nathalie (Kultum) Haugen.  When Eleanor was 2 years old, the family moved to Davenport, ND, where she grew up and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  She later graduated from Davenport High School, and Business College.

On January 13, 1943, Eleanor was united in marriage to Roy H. Paulson in Moorhead, MN.  They lived in Florida while he was serving in the military.  Their son, Rodney, was born there in 1944.   They returned to North Dakota in 1946.   Eleanor worked at Union Stockyards in West Fargo for 12 years and then for the Housing Authority of Cass County for 31 ½ years.   Roy Paulson died in 1990.

Eleanor married Archie DeTienne on May 2, 1997, in West Fargo.  They were married 17 years prior to his death in 2014.

Eleanor was very active in the West Fargo VFW Auxiliary and had served as President, District President, and State President.  She volunteered at the Fargo VA Hospital for 35 years.  Eleanor was also active in the Elkettes.  She was a Sunday school teacher and Cub Scout Den Mother.  Eleanor had enjoyed playing cards, reading, bowling, dancing, socializing and helping with the Senior Dance at the VFW.  Her family remembers her as a “classy lady” who loved red, pink, hot pink and purple, as well as all things sparkly.  She was a very giving and helpful person; always giving of herself.  She was also known for her love of cookies and sweets.  She had said she would eat them for breakfast if she could!

She will be missed by her son & daughter-in-law, Rodney and Joyce Paulson of Spicer, MN; three grandchildren: Cynthia (Jay) Kroona, Willmar, MN, Kari (Chris) Glowacki, Scottsdale, AZ,  Dr. Brian (Heidi) Paulson, Willmar, MN; four great-grandchildren: Dr. Katie (Curtis Merritt) Kroona, Phoenix, AZ,  Hannah (Brian) Douglass, Willmar, Aidan Paulson and Cora Paulson, Willmar; and a step-great-grandson, Alex Glowacki, Fargo, ND.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husbands Roy Paulson and Archie DeTienne; her siblings and in-laws:  Olander (Susie), Arvid (Fern), Elder (Estrid), Bea Haugen, Gladys (Steve) Jones and Norma (Maynard) Scilley.

At Eleanor’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial are suggested to Ethos Hospice, and the West Fargo VFW Auxiliary.
