Dorothy Hoffmann, 99, of Fargo, formerly of the Wheatland and Embden, ND areas, died Friday, October 18, 2019, at Elim Care Center in Fargo.
Dorothy Irene Hoffmann was born February 26, 1920, in Fargo, the daughter of Carl and Frieda (Rhode) Scherweit. She was raised on a farm near Mapleton, ND and graduated from high school there. Dorothy attended Concordia College in Moorhead for a year and taught rural Cass County schools for 4 years. She married Arnold “Arnie” Hoffmann on June 10, 1943, in Casselton. The couple lived and farmed in the Embden and Wheatland areas until retiring in 1979 and moving into Embden. In August of 1993, Arnie passed away, Dorothy then moved to Casselton. Later she resided at Pioneer House Assisted Living at Elim in Fargo and then to Elim’s skilled nursing care.
She was an organist for 60 years, serving Martin's Lutheran Church in Casselton and St. John Lutheran Church in Embden, where Dorothy also directed the choir and was a Sunday school teacher. She gave piano lessons, arranged hymns and in her younger years, played in a dance band.
Along with Dorothy’s passion for music, was her unending love for family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Larry (Margaret) Hoffmann and Jackie Hoffmann all of Wheatland; daughter: Joy Shirek of Minot; grandchildren: Steve (Mirna) Merrigan, Brent (Jolene) Merrigan, Marty (Tom) Byers, Jill (Aaron) Wendel, Jeff (Patrycja) Hoffmann, Rachel (Brian) Johnson, Lisa (Brandon) Erickson Amy (Dustin) Haugen, Griffin (Jenn) Hoffmann, Clay Dahl; Clinton (Reilee) Dahl, Phil (Kiley) Shirek and Charlie (Alyssa) Shirek; great-grandchildren: Zak, Cade, Kennedy, Reagan, Madison, McKinley, Zander, Carson, Trent, Taylah, Aksel, Blaze, Brogen, Hunter, Declan, Parker, Tovah, Jakub, Aleks, and Leon; numerous nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law: Bud Kipp of Edgeley, ND and Glenn Neilson of The Village, Florida.
Preceding Dorothy in death: parents; husband: Arnie in August of 1993; son: Richard in February of 1993; son-in-law: Randy Shirek in 2016; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
In lieu of floral arrangements, memorials are preferred to the St. John Cemetery at Embden, ND.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at West Funeral Home in West Fargo.
