Bonnie Olson Obituary

Bonnie Lee Olson, age 72, died on July 20, 2022 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND surrounded by loved ones.

Bonnie was born to Gaylan and Phyllis Olson on December 18, 1949 in Grand Forks, ND. She grew up with a loving family which included her parents and 2 brothers, Gary and Scott. Bonnie also had a sister, Susan, who was born before her and died at the age of 2.

Bonnie was musically gifted and began playing piano at a young age. As a child, she learned to play on an older piano in the home. As she became proficient, her parents gifted her a new piano at the age of 15. It was her most prized possession, all the way up until her death. Bonnie was also gifted with a beautiful singing voice. In 1971 she completed her college education at the University of North Dakota and earned a Bachelor’s degree in music education, majoring in voice. Throughout the years Bonnie was known for playing the piano and singing at family gatherings as well as lending her voice to many wedding ceremonies.

After college, Bonnie was married to David Stastny for 10 years and during this time had 2 children, a daughter Sally, and a son James. When her children were young she taught piano out of the home. As her children grew she began to work outside of the home as a receptionist for companies such as Cargill and Clarica.

Bonnie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a child in 1962. Over the years she endured countless hurdles with the illness. Her extreme strength and perseverance was apparent as she conquered them one by one, and came out with a smile every time. At the time of her death Bonnie had been a Type 1 Diabetic for 60 years.

Bonnie’s family meant the most to her. She loved all gatherings whether it was immediate or extended family. She supported her children with everything she had. And she loved being a grandma to her 3 grandsons Andrew, Ethan, and Isaac. By her own words, Bonnie wanted it known how much she loved her 2 children and their spouses, and her 3 grandchildren.

Bonnie is survived by her 2 children, Sally (Cory) Trottier and James (April) Stastny, grandchildren Andrew Trottier, Ethan Stastny, and Isaac Stastny, brothers Gary (Genny) Olson and Scott (Monic) Olson, along with nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Gaylan and Phyllis Olson, sister Susan Olson, nephew Michael Olson, and niece Robin Farmer.
