Allan Fredrick Nelson died Friday, July 10, 2020, at the Meadows in Fargo.
He was born April 25, 1950 in Fargo, ND, son of Alvin “Swede” and Mary (Grieger) Nelson. Allan was baptized July 9, 1950 and confirmed April 11, 1965 at St. John Lutheran Church in Arthur, ND. Allan attended grade school and high school in Arthur, graduating in 1968. Allan and Vickie Merrigan were united in married June 2, 1970, in Fargo. He furthered his education at Mayville State University and graduated from Valley City State University in 1972. Allan then taught school, coached football and was in insurance sales in Lidgerwood, ND. He was proud to be part of the Grass Green Project in 1988 at the Lidgerwood golf course. Allan was also a member of the fire department and served on the Lidgerwood City Council from 1980 to 2000. The family moved to Grand Forks in 2008 where he was employed by Ag County Services until 2014.
Allan was a member of Bergan Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood, serving as organist and as a soloist. Upon moving to Grand Forks, the family were members of Calvary Lutheran Church, where he sang in various ensembles. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, a good cigar lit or unlit and playing cards.
Allan will be fondly remembered for his outgoing personality, big smile and also loved hearing and telling a good joke.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife of 50 years: Vickie; children: Amy (Nick) Oliveira, Jennifer (Jeff) Hoeft and Brenda (Kurt) Hendrickson; grandchildren: Claire, Gracie & Gillian Hoeft, Paige, Lily and Grant Hendrickson; mother: Mary Schmidt; sister: Mary Jane Strom; uncles: Jerry (Marie) Grieger and Carl (Pam) Grieger.
He was preceded in death by his father: Alvin (Swede) Nelson; grandparents: Albin and Ida Nelson; and Walter and Edna Grieger; step-father: Allen Schmidt; uncle: Donald Grieger and aunt: Ethel Satrom.
Private Family Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at West Funeral Home in West Fargo.
Visitation: An hour prior
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo.
