Vern passed away peacefully on September 7th, 2019 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He never complained throughout his ten month courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer and even up until the end he had a smile for his loved ones. He will be immensely missed by those who knew and loved him.
Vernon Marvin Hammer was born on August 7th, 1943 to Inga (Verke) Hammer and Marvin Hammer in Langdon, ND. Vern grew up and attended school in Fairdale ND and Wahpeton State School of Science in Architectural Drafting and Estimating. He proudly served in the US Army as an SP4 (T) and was stationed overseas in France. After returning, he met the love of his life, Lynda Gunhus and they were married on August 19th, 1967. He worked for Meineke Johnson prior to starting his own construction business, Vern Hammer Construction, Inc. in 1980.
Vern was an active member of the Lions Club, Faith Journey Lutheran Church, Senior Golf Men’s Club, and several bridge groups. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities, golfing and playing bridge with friends. He loved his summers at the lake spending hours on his boat pulling his daughters and their friends on the tube.
Vern is survived by his wife Lynda, three daughters; Kim (Todd) Bollinger, Melissa (Eric) Halvorson and Angela (Ben) Scoville; grandchildren Hayden, Maren and Carson Bollinger, Rylee, Ellie and Callie Halvorson and Calvin, Owen and Eli Scoville; brothers and sisters Merlin, Irvin (Gladys), Delores (Neil) McDonald, Evie (Marvin) Skytland and Ron (Judy); sisters-in-law, Karen (Rich) Axvig and Ruth Ann (Marion) Monteleone and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, sister-in-law Beverly Hammer, nephew Troy McDonald and very good friend Larry Lund.
Celebration of Life: 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2019, Faith Journey Lutheran Church, in West Fargo.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND
Prayer Service and Time of Sharing: 7 p.m. Tuesday, in the funeral home.
