Douglas H. Sommerfeld

Doug Sommerfeld, 84, Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, July 10, 2018 in Sanford Health, Palliative Care, Fargo, ND.

Douglas Harvy Sommerfeld was born May 29, 1934 in Fargo to Emil and Alice (Strek) Sommerfeld. He was raised on the family farm at Alice, ND, attended rural school in Eldred Township and graduated from Valley High School in 1952. He was drafted into the US Army and served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. Upon discharge, he attended Valley City State College. He then farmed for 10 years. Doug married Janice Evelyn Burgess in 1968 in Moorhead. They lived in Fargo until moving to Moorhead in 1972. He worked at Interior Lumber in Fargo for 25 years retiring in 1996.

Doug enjoyed time with family, the MN Twins and a cold 7UP. He could fix and repair almost anything and like to be busy.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Sommerfeld, Fargo and Vicki (Michael) Daugherty, Moorhead; six grandchildren, Blake Sommerfeld, Tyler Walters, and Taylor, Madison, Aiden and Aubrey Daugherty; along with several nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice; sister, Lois and brother, Jerome.

Visitation: Friday, July 13, 2018 from 5 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at West Funeral Home, Casselton, ND.

Funeral: Saturday, July 14 at 2 PM at St. John Lutheran Church, Embden, ND with visitation one hour prior.

Burial: Alice (ND) Community Cemetery.
