Barry K. Schonteich, 73, of Grand Forks, died peacefully Tuesday, October 8, 2019, in Sanford Health in Fargo surrounded by family.
Barry Kenneth Schonteich was born October 4, 1946, in Fargo, the son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Enockson) Schonteich. He was raised in Enderlin, ND and graduated from high school there in 1964. Barry enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp before graduation and went immediately to basic training. He served seven years and was discharged as a sergeant. Two years later, Barry enlisted in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer, the most senior non-commissioned rank and position in the U.S. Navy. He served in Vietnam, aboard the USS Forrestal with VF-31, USS Saratoga, USS Hayler and USS Gurnard. He served several stints as a recruiter during his military career and finished his service as a Recruiting Zone Supervisor. After 24 years of service to his country, Barry retired in 1990 and returned to North Dakota. He then enrolled at the University of North Dakota, graduating with a B.A. in Anthropology in 1995.
Barry’s passion for the outdoors led to a career fishing professionally for walleye for several years. He also drove semi-truck over-the-road until he fully retired to spend more time hunting and tournament fishing at Devils Lake.
He loved his family, his country, North Dakota, and those fellow Marines and Sailors he served with in the military.
Surviving are his wife: Monica; children: Leif (Ellen) Schonteich and Livia (Dan) Helm all of Fargo; grandchildren: Foster, Wynn, Ella, Jaxson, Chase and Addilyn; a sister: Susan (Gary) Cavett of Fargo; and nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents: sister: Jane Schonteich and a brother: Kim Schonteich.
Interment with full Military Honors: 2 p.m. Monday, October 21, 2019, at the Fargo National Cemetery, rural Harwood, ND.
