Dear Mary Ann, and family
Duane was always a wonderful cousin, as we were not far apart in age. He was always so quiet and considerate as we grew up. Just like his Dad, my Uncle Ewald. Although I spent many years away from the North Dakota I knew I still remember the good old days. One could never ask for a nicer, better person than my cousin Duane. May he rest in peace, and may all of you come to accept his loss and know he was the best here was.

What can a person say about Duane? A gentle spirit, a quiet soul, loving, kind, caring, responsible, fun, friendly, supportive, smart, witty, understated?

I lived about a mile as the dog bark carries on a foggy morning from Duane. I knew him first when he and his dad put up corn silage with my family on perspective farms. My dad and family thought so much of the Moderows. That's when I first met Doc (Doug).

As Doc was my best friend, I spent many great hours at his house. Not just to see Doc, but also to spend time with his family. We played cards, board games, Mohjong, and one in particular,Dark Tower, for hours into the night and early morning. Man it was so much fun to play a game with them. Loved it.

Duane and Mary Ann were like my second parents. True I didn't need second parents but I spent so much time with them that they had a great impression on me. They went on my first actual time skiing at Fort Ransom; Duane actually skiing if I recall. They invited me to their cabin and Duane ran the boat my first time I tried water skiing and didn't make fun of me when I crashed oh so many times prior to actually succeeding. Many more skiing outings....

Duane and Mary Ann were chaperones on two trips that I "tagged" along with that Dave Watters put together to lessen his high school aged parishioners naivety about life outside North Dakota. Namely a trip to the inner city to Chicago's south side and a trip to St Louis' north side; both scary as I remember.

Duane was the calming factor for many a discussion on those trips and in many ways my guide to sanity. If he didn't look too worried, I thought it okay to relax. If his face was a bit strained, I took notice. Again, like a father in many ways and I needed one on those trips.

Duane will be missed by many because he was, well, Duane. I will miss him because he was so much more. I know your family and all your friends will miss you and it will hurt because of who you are/were. It should hurt when something so precious is taken away from you.

Duane may be gone but my memories he will live on and on. Bye Duane, love you.
