Walter Munkeby Obituary

Walter E. Munkeby, 91, of Lisbon, North Dakota, passed away on September 8, 2024 at SMP Health-Maryhill, Enderlin, ND.

Walter Everett Munkeby was born May 18, 1933, to Henry and Inga (Jodsaas) Munkeby in Ransom County on the family farm near Fort Ransom, North Dakota. Walter attended Ransom County rural schools including Cooley, Johnny Nelson and Vold schools for grades 1-8. He attended and graduated from Fort Ransom High School in 1951. Walter married Eileen Mahrer on September 18, 1954, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon, North Dakota. They celebrated nearly 65 years of marriage. Walter and Eileen made their home and worked on the family farm near Fort Ransom, where they raised their five children. They retired from farming and moved to Lisbon in 1996. Eileen passed away in March of 2020.

Walter worked long days as a farmer. The land was important to him, challenged him and was part of him. Walter was a dedicated and honorable husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his family and supported them. He always encouraged everyone to do their very best.

Walter enjoyed traveling, was very social, had a good sense of humor and really enjoyed visiting with as many people as he could. He enjoyed telling stories and reminiscing with everyone. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle. Walter frequently enjoyed driving in the countryside to ‘check things out’.

Walter had a constant interest in the welfare of national, state and local events. He believed in service to others. He was very community minded and supported the systems for family, education and the environment. Walter served on a variety of boards that promoted educational, environmental and community issues including Soil Conservation District Supervisor for Ransom County, Ransom Township Supervisor, Stiklestad Cemetery Association, Fort Ransom School Board, Lisbon Senior Center and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Walter is survived by five children: Steven (Marti) Munkeby, Cummings, Georgia; Susan (Michael) Moellenkamp, Lisbon; David (Bobbi) Munkeby, Englevale/Fort Ransom; Lori (Kim) Trucke, West Fargo; Joni (Bud) Belk, Fargo; 13 grandchildren and 27.9 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Lorraine Holmstrom, Fargo; sister-in-law Bette Munkeby, Valley City; sister-in-law Charolotte Mahrer, Gilbert, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Walter is preceded in death by his wife, Eileen, brother Ronald Munkeby and a great-grandson.
