Terry Clinton Potter, age 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, surrounded by his family at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Terry was born on April 17, 1941, in Philip, South Dakota, to Lillian and Charles Potter. He later lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, before moving with his family to Morgan, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school in 1959. On September 3, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Zick, in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. The couple moved to Mankato, Minnesota, where Terry attended college, and later settled in West Fargo, where he lived until his passing.
Terry spent most of his life working at D&P Terminal, a grain storage, processing and bird food packaging business. He began working with his father and took over the business in 1961, continuing until his retirement in 2006. He also owned a parking lot striping business for many years.
Terry looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Canada with his father. He was a previous member of the West Fargo planning and zoning committee, a Jaycee, member of the Eagles, Cub Scout leader, and enjoyed league bowling. In more recent years, he especially enjoyed spending time at the family lake home, “Potter’s Paradise,” on Lake Lizzie. His faithful furry travel companion, Brisky, was often by his side. Terry was also known for his woodworking skills, creating doll furniture, coat racks, tables, and many other projects.
Terry was a hardworking businessman who always put his family first. He was strong, determined, and persistent, and was always willing to offer advice or lend a hand. Full of love and kindness, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughters, Tammy (Eric) Salhoff, Teresa, Tracie; and his son, Thomas (Kim). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Chris, Kelton, Nick (Kayla), Noah, and Hannah; and two great-granddaughters, Ella and Evelyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles, Lillian and stepmother Gretel, brother Richard and wife Shirley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Kingsmen at Faith Journey Lutheran Church of West Fargo or the Roger Maris Cancer Center.
A Celebration of Life open house will be held on Friday, September 18, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at ResCom Construction at 1251 13th Ave. W, West Fargo, ND 58078. Food and refreshments will be provided.
