Morning
I was born at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Growing up, we moved around a lot, which meant I got to experience many different schools—and rebel a bit more than my siblings. In 1972, I enlisted in the Army and returned to Fort Leonard Wood for basic training. From there, I was stationed in South Korea during the Vietnam War era as part of the 9th Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division—“Keep up the fire.”
After being honorably discharged in 1974, I headed back to Fargo, North Dakota, where I met the love of my life, Patsy. We married in 1980 and were blessed with three beautiful daughters: Tina (Jason Erickson), Michelle (Holm–Shannon Hill), and Alicia (Casey Burnside).
I worked at American Crystal Sugar for nearly 34 years and served as Union President of Local 372 G for BCTGM during much of that time. As a machinist, I understood the importance of precision and getting the job done right. It would’ve only taken 2% to prevent the lockout, but corporate greed made retirement come a little easier.
Retirement gave me the chance to spend quality time with my eight grandchildren—Brookelynn, Matthew, Mya, Jordan, Faith, Remington, Traverse, and Sullivan—and one fresh great-grandchild. It gave Patsy and me the chance to take them on the same road trips we once took their mothers on when they were little.
Every summer, we spent time together at White Earth Lake. My wife may not have known how to swim, but she was always stuck in the boat with me for hours, fishing—something I know she secretly loved.
I usually have a word of wisdom, a life lesson, or a joke for any situation… but not this one. I knew this day would be hard for everyone, and I tried my best to delay the hurt—for my friends, my family, my girls, and my wife.
This may be harder for you than it is for me, because I’ll be greeted in heaven by my mom (Marie Hill), dad (Glen Holm), stepmom (Pat Holm), brother (Kelly), and brother-in-law (Steve Heimer), and many others dear to my heart who passed before me.
To my stepdad Jim Hill, my sisters Sandy Heimer, Kathy Johnson, LoAnn Dybevik, and my brother Bryan Anderson—we may have been miles apart, but we were always connected at heart.
To my wife, no matter how hard it got, in every twist and turn of life’s adventure, you were my constant companion—the loyal partner to my daring spirit. You never left my side and held my hand until the end. If I could save time in a bottle, every moment spent with you would be the first thing I'd choose to keep. You gave me a lifetime of love in the time we had, and I’ll carry that with me always.
I love you all. Until we meet again—Later.
