Stephen King Obituary

Everyone’s Friend….known to many as ”Tut” “Tutter” “Tutly” “Tutter Butter” Stephen King of Casselton, ND passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Sanford Health on 23rd in Fargo, ND at the age of 68.

Stephen H. King was born July 4, 1956 to Robert and Dolores (Schafer) King. He was a lifelong resident of Casselton where he graduated from high school. He continued his schooling at UND in Grand Forks where he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting in 1978. He returned to Casselton where he and his brother Mike took over the Dairy Queen from their parents. He then worked for Gordy’s Inc for 31 years and served as a manager for several years retiring in 2023.

Tut was a man about town. He was a gentle giant, friend to all, generous, kind, witty, had a big heart and fun loving. Most of all he was simple man – money and material things didn’t matter. Family and friends were the most important. One of his favorite past times was driving around The Miss Daisy’s (aka his sister and her friend Dawn Stibal). He always had the patience of St. Job and afterward there was always a story to be told.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and played billiards. He was a sports fan and a die hard MN Vikings fan. He also enjoyed Central Cass School sporting events, UND “Sioux” Hockey and MN Wild Hockey. He also loved classic rock especially AC “and” the DC as well as The Doors and Led Zeppelin. He did not like country “and” western.

In recent years, Steve’s daily routine was going to the Dairy Queen to make sure that they “stayed in business” and his home away from home at Dusty’s Tavern.

Tutly is survived by two siblings, Robert (Helen) King of Maple Grove, MN and Eileen King of Casselton; nieces and nephews, Jason (Crystal) King, Amy King, Eric (Ashley) King and Kara (Mikal) Ihry; great nieces, Abby and Isabelle; and great nephews, Bryce and Damien.

He was welcomed with open arms by his parents; brothers, Mike and Mark; nephew, Christopher King; great niece, Michaela King.

Funeral:  Friday, May 23, 2025 at 11 AM at West Funeral Home Chapel, Casselton with visitation one hour prior.

Burial: St. Leo’s Cemetery, Casselton.
