Sheryl Kay Umsted

Sheryl Kay (Lemley) Umsted, age 82, of Fargo, ND, died Sunday, May 11th, 2025, in her home.

Sheryl Kay Lemley was born January 18th, 1943, in Valley City, ND to George S. and LaMae (Cole) Lemley.

Sheryl attended school in Pillsbury, ND, graduating in 1960. She then attended Valley City State Teachers College, graduating with a Standard Teaching Degree. She then taught in Tappen, ND and Blooming Prairie, MN. Sheryl later returned to school at Valley City State University and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and then taught Elementary School in Buffalo, ND.

On August 9th, 1968, Sheryl married Russell Umsted in Pillsbury, ND. They moved to Fargo, ND where they made their home on the Northside. Sheryl was a full-time Mom until their children were in Jr. High. Sheryl then worked for Western States Life Insurance, which then became The Mutual Group, until her retirement.

In 2007, Sheryl was blessed with her first grandchild, Madeline Kay, followed 3 months later with her second grandchild, Cole Steven. Four years later, Owen Dean was born, followed 2 months later with Cade Russell. Sheryl then became 'Grandma Daycare' to Cole and Cade until they started school.

Sheryl enjoyed spending her time quilting, but most of all she enjoyed being able to watch her grandkids play softball, baseball, hockey, and basketball.

Sheryl was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; her parents, George & LaMae Lemley; her Mother & Father In-Law, Harry & Margaret (Jack) Umsted; Brother In-Law, Duane Burchill Sr.; Sisters In-Law & Spouses, JoAnn & Doug Howells, Marion & Robert Iverson, Dorothy & Don Wygle; her nephew, Brian Lemley and her Great-Niece, Cassidy (Burchill) Domres.

She is survived by her children, Jason & Barb Umsted, and Melinda & Steve Middlestead; Grandchildren, Madeline, Cole, Owen, and Cade; Siblings: Arden (Joanne) Lemley, Michael Lemley and Gayle Burchill; Brother In-Law; Al (Carol) Umsted, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 11:00am at West Funeral Home in West Fargo, ND. Burial will take place following services at Fargo National Cemetery.
