Roberta Teegarden, 94, of Hunter, ND passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Sanford Medical Center, Hillsboro, ND.
Roberta Ann Freeman was born to William and Elva Freeman on June 19, 1927. She was born and raised on the family farm outside Orrick, MO. She grew up in the same house with her parents, her brother Charles, her Freeman grandparents and an aunt.
She attended grades 1-8 in a one room schoolhouse just north of the family farm. She graduated from Orrick High School in 1945. “1945” was a busy year for Roberta. She married Naval Gunners Mate Virgil “Bob” Teegarden on February 8th. She graduated from Orrick High School on May 13th as Mrs. Roberta Teegarden. On May 14th, she moved to San Francisco, CA to be with her husband who was in the Navy. In October of 1945, after Bob received his discharge from the Navy, they moved to North Dakota where they farmed with his family, 4 miles north of Hunter.
On December 1, 1951 they moved into Hunter where they owned and operated a grocery store/meat market until it burned down on June 19, 1956. Roberta and Bob enjoyed 53 years together before his death on February 21, 1998. During this time, she held many positions in the community and church. She lived on the same street corner in Hunter for nearly 70 years.
Roberta and Bob had seven children: Robert (Renee), Billie (Julie), Theresa (Jerry) Hertwig, Belinda (Mike) Willert, Richard, Roger (deceased) and Paul (Kathy). She had 17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren (with one more on the way). Roberta’s family lived close enough that she had regular visits from them. Roberta enjoyed having children and grandchildren in the Hunter School District for 60 straight years.
Roberta was known for her hugs, sewing abilities, and being known as Grandma T. by many in Hunter and the surrounding area. Roberta enjoyed baking, sewing, reading, crocheting, jigsaw and search-a-word puzzles, helping at her church and just visiting with family and friends. Every year on her birthday, she eagerly waited for her ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; infant son Roger Lynn; brother, Charles Freeman; daughter-in-law, Julie Teegarden; granddaughter, Rhonda Roesler; and great great grandson, Greyson James Jacobson.
