Rev. Arthur Weidner Obituary

Reverend Arthur Philip Weidner entered the presence of Jesus, the Christ, on January 10, 2024.  He was born to Albert and Bertha (Richau) Weidner on September 11, 1938, on the family farm north of Zap, ND.  He was baptized at St. John’s of Wuerttemberg, near Zap, and confirmed at St. Luke’s in Zap.  He graduated from Northwood High School in Northwood, ND, in 1957 and went on to earn his teaching degree from Concordia College in St. Paul, MN, where he met Angeline VandaLea Jacobs.

On August 23, 1959, Art and Angie were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, MN.  Art taught in Evansville, Indiana and at Mt. Calvary Lutheran School in Phoenix, Arizona, before attending Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois. He was a vicar in Ottawa, Ontario, and was ordained at Christ Lutheran in Norfolk, Nebraska.  He was pastor of Eternal Life Lutheran Church in Mesa, Arizona for 4 years before coming to Grace Lutheran in Fargo, North Dakota, where he served as pastor for 25 years.  During that time, he wrote and produced a radio program known as The Way that aired on WDAY radio and he was pastoral advisor on the Board of Directors of Dakota Boys & Girls Ranch.  He willingly filled in wherever needed, as school bus driver, janitor, landscaper, painter, snow-shoveler and even bat-remover.  After his retirement in 2000, Art and Angie moved to Fergus Falls, where they were thrilled to purchase their own home for the first time.

During retirement, Rev. Weidner continued to fill various vacancies at churches in and near Fergus Falls and was an outreach pastor for the Lutheran Heritage Foundation. Never one to sit while there is work to be done, he also worked as a general laborer for his nephew’s landscaping business in Fergus Falls.  He was dedicated to his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and church family.  In 2016, he moved into Eventide Assisted Living in Fargo and was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in West Fargo, ND.

He is survived by four children, Amy (Cliff) Hoskins of Costa Mesa, California; Edith (Steve) Opdahl of Bonita Springs, Florida; Christian (Amanda) Weidner of Chaska, Minnesota; and Arthur (Cari) Weidner of West Fargo, ND; ten grandchildren, Samuel, Karen (Taylor), Jonathan (Jenna), Timothy (Kaitlin), Daniel, Christa, Philip, Andrew, Audrey and Claire; two great-grandchildren, Friedrich and Ingrid; a brother, Harold of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Alma Hamre of Minot, ND and Judy Weidner of Omaha, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Bertha Weidner; wife, Angeline Weidner; brother, Leo Weidner; and grandson, Nathan Weidner.

The funeral will be held on Monday, January 15, at 3 PM at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in West Fargo, ND, with visitation from 1-3 at St. Andrew and the committal service will follow on Tuesday, January 16, at 11 AM at Trinity Faith Cemetery in Fergus Falls, MN.
