Phyllis Schur Obituary

Phyllis M. Schur, age 85, of Mandan, ND, formerly of Fargo, ND, died May 2, 2020, at Sunset Drive, a Prospera Community Nursing Home, Mandan.

Phyllis Marian Rilling was born April 26, 1935 in Brainerd, MN.  She was the only child of Ralph and Esther (Gorton) Rilling.  She grew up in the Mille Lacs Lake area of MN, a small town called Wahkon, MN.   In 1953, she had to finished high school early to follow her father’s employment transfer by Standard Oil to Fargo, ND, where she also found employment.  She did return in the Spring of 1953, to graduate with her classmates at Isle High School, Isle, MN (a stone’s throw from Wahkon).

Phyllis married Leroy Schur of Arthur, ND on November 20, 1954 in Fargo, ND, and where they continued to live until they retired in 1990.  During their retirement years, they summered on Lake Melissa, near Detroit Lakes, MN and wintered in Mesa, AZ.

Leroy & Phyllis had 4 children: Darcy, Gail, Jacqueline and Darian.  Phyllis was a stay at home mom, until the children were of school age.  She worked at Ritchman Printing a short time, and later worked in the office at OK Tire Store in Fargo, ND.

Leroy passed away in 2001.  Phyllis then moved to Mayflower Gardens, a Retirement Community in Lancaster, CA to live near her daughter Darcy and family.  During 2010, Phyllis became ill, and was no longer able to care for herself.  She decided to return to North Dakota and live out her remaining years near Gail in Mandan, ND.  It was at this time, she became a resident of Sunset Drive, a Prospera Community Nursing Home in Mandan, ND.

Phyllis was a Christian who attended and became a member of Lutheran Churches in Fargo, Detroit Lakes, Mesa, and California.  She practiced her faith at Sunset Drive for the last 10 years.  She became especially fond of Pastor Ron during this time.

Phyllis made friends easily, and over the years, she kept in touch with many of them.  She loved going to all the activities the nursing home offered; music, playing cards, bingo, dominos and pokeno.  She also loved to have her nails done on a regular basis.

Her family was important to her, and she liked hearing about what everyone was doing on a weekly basis. She proudly displayed family pictures and artwork from all of us in her room.

Her sharp mind, warm smile and quick wit will be greatly missed by all who loved her dearly.   She is survived by three daughters: Darcy Hedstrom, Phelan, CA, Gail (Alan) King, Mandan, ND, Jacqueline Gudmundson, Dallas, TX and one son, Darian Schur, Detroit Lakes, MN; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leroy; granddaughter Sarah Gudmundson, grandson Jonathan Berg, and son-in-law Marlin “Scott” Hedstrom.
