Omar Berg Obituary

Omar M. Berg, 84, Fargo, went to be with his heavenly Father on February 17, 2020.

He was born on March 6, 1935 to Olaf and Myrtle (Sveen) Berg in Bottineau and was raised on the family farm outside of Landa, ND.  He graduated from Bottineau High School in 1952 and attended North Dakota State University in Fargo for a short time before moving back to the family farmstead to farm and ranch with his father.  He met Audrey (Arens) when they were both on a trip to the Holy Land. They were married in 1977 and moved into their own place on the family farm.

A man of strong Christian faith, Omar was a member of Lesje Lutheran Church, a local church near Souris where he was active throughout his entire life until it closed in 2013. He also loved music and would often sing in church either by himself or with groups. An accomplished horseman, Omar also enjoyed riding horses. On family vacations to camps with horses, he would always request a horse with “spunk” and a chance to exhibit his horsemanship skills. Active most of his life and well into retirement, Omar also played baseball, basketball and a good game of steal sticks or ante over with anyone who wanted to join him -- including his favorite opponents, his grandkids.

After he retired from farming he was very active with the Gideons and would often volunteer his time with various organizations and with friends or family who needed rides, help with chores or a visit to keep them company.

Omar loved his family and friends, and especially enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren, John and Kaisa. He moved from the family farm near Souris to Fargo in 2013 to be closer to them. He enjoyed being close enough to swing by anytime to spend time with them. Attending their school, church and sporting events was a favorite activity. When he couldn't attend in person, he would tell them to “score an extra two points for grandpa!” and then listen intently to see how they had performed or played. Throughout the years he also attended many family trips and created a lifetime of impactful memories.

Omar loved a good joke or prank and would have a twinkle in his eye when he knew he had “got ya!" He would often bet you “a medium M&M Blizzard” when he was sure he was right. Many of us still owe him one.

After moving to Fargo, Omar found a wonderful group of friends at his new church that he cherished. Many thanks to each of them for making his life so rich and full.

Family: Omar is survived by his children Rebekah (Matthew) Tompkins, West Fargo and Christian (Shannone) Berg, Granville, NY; grandchildren John and Kaisa Tompkins; sister Juli (Arlen) Severson and many nieces and nephews.

Omar is reunited in heaven with his wife, Audrey, and parents, Olaf and Myrtle Berg and many other treasured family and friends.
