Marlene Schultz Obituary

Marlene Schultz passed away Nov 21, 2022, at the age of 85. Marlene Friederich was born in 1937 in Kulm ND. She was the daughter of Paul and Lydia (Fuchs) Friederich. They lived on a farm south of Fredonia ND. In 1952 they moved to Seattle WA and a year later settled in Jamestown ND. Marlene married Arnie Becker in 1955 and they had 2 children, Brenda and Craig.

Marlene managed the Jamestown Truck Plaza Café for several years. After her divorce she purchased an old ice cream parlor in the Jamestown Mall and opened The Depot Café. She married Vernon Schultz in 1988 and they worked together at The Depot until retiring in 1999. Vern passed away in 2015. Marlene moved to the Jamestown Heritage Center in 2016 and passed away while living at the Memory Care Unit at New Perspectives in West Fargo, ND.

Along with managing a successful restaurant, Marlene enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, golfing, and traveling with special friends to Branson and Medora (and made sure to check out any casinos along the way). She liked to attend plays and musicals and would fill her van with friends for a night out. She was a great cook and made many German dishes like chicken and strudels, chicken and dumplings, kuchen, knoephla soup and stirrum. She loved her dog, Snugs, beyond measure and a more spoiled dog did not exist!

Marlene was a loving mother and a friend to so many. Her smile, laughter and kind heart will be missed by us all.

Marlene is survived by her daughter Brenda (Dave) Elkins, Cody WY; Craig (Deb) Becker, West Fargo, ND; 5 grandchildren: Mitch (Amanda) Holland, Cabot, AR; Cody Elkins, Cody WY; Tyler Elkins, Cody WY; Sarah Becker, Omaha NE; Kathryn (Brandon) Clark, Rapid City SD; 6 great-grandchildren: MacKenzie, Madelyn, Emily, Mitchell, Peyton, Beckett; her brother Cal (Jeanie), Petoskey MI; sister-in-law Gayle Friederich, Larimore, ND and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vern; parents, Paul and Lydia Friederich, and her brother, Darvin Friederich.

A private family service will be held at a later date.  Interment will be in ND Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, ND, Spring 2023.

Memorials can be sent to The Heritage Center in Jamestown , ND, or The Alzheimer’s Association.
