Magdalena “Maggie” Smith, 87, of Fargo, formerly of Wheatland, N.D., died on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at Sanford Health in Fargo.
Maggie Stroh was born on January 17, 1934, on a farm near Tappen, N.D., to August and Caroline (Mittleider) Stroh. She was raised on the family farm and attended schools in Tappen, where she graduated from high school and played for the girls’ basketball team.
Following high school, she attended college at Bismarck and earned a business degree. Her first full time job after Highschool was at Yegen Dairy as a bookkeeper in Bismarck, N.D. She then traveled and worked in California, Colorado and Wyoming before returning home to North Dakota, where she met the love of her life, Merlon Smith, and they were married on December 30, 1960 in Sisseton, South Dakota.
They lived and farmed in Wheatland, N.D., where Maggie worked unceasingly as a farm wife, bringing many meals out to the field. She also worked in various positions for St. Luke’s/MeritCare/Sanford Health before retiring at age 72. For a short while after, she worked as a home health aide and at the Casselton Motel.
Maggie belonged to the Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, N.D., where she taught Sunday School, and later belonged to Martin’s Lutheran Church in Casselton. She also belonged to a homemakers club, Casselton Booster Club, was known for being the best dancer at wedding parties, and for her scalloped corn.
Maggie is survived by her husband, Merlon, of Wheatland, N.D.; children, Darcy Smith, Wheatland, Harry (Pam) Smith, Fargo, Lucy Strouse, Coon Rapids, Minn.; grandchildren (Steve’s): Jessica Hubbard, Jacob Smith, Isaac Smith, Luke Smith, Bridget Weber, Katie Ohnstad, (Harry’s): Colton Smith and Austin Smith, (Lucy’s): Camille Schuster and Whitney Hooper; 24 great-grandchildren and two on the way; and one great-great-grandchild; 2 sisters, Mary Hedges and Emma Hedges-Garner; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Stroh; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Smith; and a step-granddaughter, Claire.
She was preceded in death by a son, Steve Smith; her parents, August and Caroline Stroh; 8 siblings; and a step-grandchild, “J. M.”

Visitation: Friday, September 17, 2021, from 5-7 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m., in Martin’s Lutheran Church, Casselton, N.D.
Funeral Service: Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. in Martin’s Lutheran Church, Casselton, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
