Leonard Wahl, Sr. Obituary

Leonard D. Wahl Sr. went to his heavenly home on February 22, 2024.  Leonard was born on May 26, 1937, in Ashley ND, to Ted and Christina Wahl.  He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1955.  Leonard served in the U.S. Army where he met his love of his life, Betty Clark.  They were married on September 6, 1959. Their first home was in Ashley, ND, and then later moved and spent 55 years living in Portland, ND.  After retirement they moved to West Fargo in 2019 and in 2021 moved to the Good Samaritan Senior Living in Fargo.

Leonard had an entrepreneurial spirit.  He could be heard telling his kids to never be afraid to dream and to try! It was this spirit that led Leonard to spend the larger portion of his life building his businesses Leonard Wahl Sandwiches in Portland and later Bonita’s Pizza in Hatton ND.  They would be most famously known for creating the Chicken Alfredo Pizza!  Leonard and his wife Betty both had a passion for music and spent over 60 years playing music.  Leonard’s gift was playing his accordion and to have Betty by his side singing.  As their music continued to be a part of their life, their son Leonard Jr. joined the band and together they traveled many years across ND and MN playing music, making life-long friends, and bringing joy to the many that loved to dance to traditional polkas and waltzes.  Leonard had many proud music accomplishments, together he, Leonard Jr., and Betty recorded 2 albums, produced the Leonard Wahl variety television show, and organized a Polka Fest in Portland where Governor Art Link attended played his fiddle with dad and the band.

Leonard enjoyed several pastimes. He loved his 40 Ford and Betty’s 56’ T-Bird and they enjoyed participating in parades and car shows. Another pastime was Leonard love to bowl and was active in several bowling leagues. He traveled to many national bowling tournaments with very dear friends that made each year that much more special. He treasured those friendships. One large accomplishment was in his 70’s, Leonard won the men’s national bowling tournament in Las Vegas.  In their later years they enjoyed a slower pace camping on the weekends at the Woodland Resort in Devils Lake.  They filled their days fishing for walleyes, playing cards, lots of storytelling, and entertaining guests.

Leonard is survived by his beloved wife Betty of 64 years, son Leonard (Josie) Wahl Jr., Davenport, IA, daughters Cheryl Tate, Brownell, KS, Kim (Mike) Pladson, Rochert, MN, and Kathy (Matt) Klath, Portland, ND,  grandchildren Nicole (Rob) Hardwick, Jacob and Ryan Klath, Justin (Lynette) Perreault, Leslie (Tim) Frie, Kayla (Derryl) Givens, and Bryce (Rachel) Wahl and great grandchildren Iris, Lyla, Jude, Eton, Mattie, Ashley, Scarlet and Lucy. Siblings Collin (friend Dolly), Claude (Darlene), Carrold (Luella), and Marie (Jim) Delzer.
