Larry Gangnes, 83, Argusville, ND passed away on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025 at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo, ND.
Larry Allen Gangnes was born on February 7, 1942, in Fargo, North Dakota, to Ludvig and Myrtle (Holmen) Gangnes. He began his education in a one-room country school, Berlin Grade School, and went on to graduate from Grandin High School in 1960. He later graduated from Interstate Business College and served six years in the National Guard.
Larry’s career path reflected his strong work ethic. He first worked as a bookkeeper for Larson Farm Supply in West Fargo, then as a Standard Oil Bulk Agent in Horace, and later served as manager of the Mapleton Co-Op for 15 years. After that, he farmed for 35 years - a role that brought him great fulfillment.
Larry took pride in many things, including the fact that he had never been in a car accident or received a speeding ticket. As a boy, he often sat on the rock outside his barn, dreaming of one day having a big white shed. In time, he made that dream a reality.
His faith was central to his life. He was an active member of Herby Lutheran Church, where he served on the church board and cemetery committee. He also acted as bookkeeper for the Herby Men’s Group. In addition, he was involved with Compassionate Friends, offering support to other bereaved fathers.
On October 24, 1964, Larry married Lois Kaldor at Herby Lutheran Church. Together they shared 60 years of marriage, raising three children and later welcoming six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Larry is survived by his wife, Lois; children Lori Beth (Paul) Ill and Mark Allen (Melissa) Gangnes; grandchildren Bethany (Barry) McRaith, Nicholas (Macie Graham) Ill, Katelin (Tayler Mees) Ill, Hunter Gangnes, Holden Gangnes, and Hannah Gangnes; great-granddaughters Rosemary McRaith and Adalyn Ill, and sister, Linda Cooley.
He was preceded in death by his son Brent Martin Gangnes (2001), brother Clayton Gangnes (2003), and parents, Ludvig and Myrtle Gangnes.
In keeping with Larry’s wishes, memorials may be directed to Oak Grove Lutheran School for the Brent M. Gangnes Memorial Scholarship or to the Herby Cemetery Fund.
