Jon Iwen, 72, of Detroit Lakes, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Sanford Medical Center, in Fargo, ND.
Jonathan David Iwen was born on June 29, 1953, in Fargo, ND, to Bertrand “Bert” and Joanne (Lein) Iwen. He grew up in Arthur, where he was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church and graduated from Dakota High School. He then attended NDSU in Fargo and MSUM in Moorhead, earning bachelor’s degrees in sociology and social work.
Following college, he worked in all areas of social work. He married Debbie Van Den Eykel in 1988 and they moved to MN. Jon retired as a manager at Becker County Social Services.
Jon loved music, visiting museums, was an avid reader, campfires, driving, pontoon rides, and sitting by the fire at the cabin with family and friends. He was happiest when his house was full of family, friends, and food.
Jon is survived by his wife, Deb; siblings Peter (Bev) Iwen, Mary (Bob) Christensen; Rachel (Jim) Kupfer, Sam Iwen (Nancy), Abe Iwen (Janine); and several nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert & Joanne Iwen; and a special grandmother, Jennie Iwen Prestbo.
Memorials are preferred to a charity of the giver’s choice.
Jon was an organ donor and gave the gift of life—please consider becoming an organ donor.
Jon’s family would like to thank all of the staff at Sanford, especially Dr. Thompson and Dr. Toumeh, and the home dialysis team in Detroit Lakes, for their care and compassion.
A celebration of life is planned for the summer of 2026.
