He started in Chicago Public Schools, moved to the suburb of Geneva IL, and continued on to Fargo, ND in 1983 where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson. From his first marriage, his daughter Jaqueline (Jackie) Wilson was born in 1986. He married Monica Lindemann September 1996. The two lived together in Fargo, ND until his passing.

John's last position was at Estes Express for the past 11 years, making deliveries locally and regionally as a truck driver. John had many interests and hobbies that included collecting trains, slot cars, lawnmowers, snowblowers, motorcycles, rifles and cars. He loved and was very talented at repairing and restoring older vehicles, along with anything mechanical. John was patient, took his time, and really enjoyed buying or fixing mechanical equipment for others. John also enjoyed gardening, watching birds from all of the bird feeders that he had out, loved lawn care, going to see his family in Kentucky, attending gun shows, and attending auctions. John was well known for calling into the Jay Thomas Show. He was known as "PropertyTaxJohn". John was passionate about his beliefs and was not afraid to voice his opinion. John and Monica enjoyed their Mexican food and buffets, as well as sitting outside in the backyard on their green bench. John also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife, Monica of 29 years; his father, John J Wilson; a brother, William (Bill) and sister in law, Lily; a daughter; Jaqueline (Jackie) Wilson, 4 grandchildren; McKenzie, Ashlynn, Sofyia, and Aliviah, an uncle Terry and Alberta (Berta), his brothers and sisters in-laws, Wilson cousins, and nephews and a niece.
