Joe Ruliffson Obituary

Joseph Stephen Ruliffson, 90, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Saturday, March 22nd at Sanford Hospital in Fargo.

Joe was born on April 2nd, 1934, in Fargo, ND, to Ralph and Margaret (Ranes) Ruliffson. He grew up on the family farm north of Mapleton, ND, and graduated from Mapleton High School. Following his high school years, Joe attended North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University), where he majored in Animal Husbandry graduating in 1956. During his time at NDAC, he was actively involved in the Gold Star Marching Band, Blue Key, Saddle & Sirloin, the Student Senate, and several agricultural organizations. He was particularly proud to be a member of the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho, where he served as Noble Ruler. His time at NDAC fostered lifelong friendships that he cherished.

After graduation, Joe served in the United States Army for two years, primarily stationed at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. Upon completing his service, he returned to the family farm in Mapleton, where he partnered with his father, Ralph, and his brother, Paul.

On September 23rd, 1961, Joe married Joan Marie Pauls at Highland Lutheran Church near Cummings, ND. They built a life together, farming in the Mapleton area until their retirement in 1997. Joe was involved in both farm and social organizations within his community and made significant contributions to the agricultural field.

They were active members at both Mapleton Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, Fargo. He served as an elder, deacon and especially enjoyed singing in the choir at both churches.  They recently joined First Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Joe had a deep love for his family and their traditions. He and Joan took great pride in attending as many events as possible that their family participated in. A passionate supporter of the Bison, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his favorite team. Joe also found great joy at their lake cabin, making countless cherished memories with his family. His kindness and dedication to his family and friends will be deeply missed.

Joe is survived by his wife, Joan; their children, Nancy Nelson (Joe Wavra), Barbara (Mark) Erbstoesser, Loree (Jon) Zuther and Brian (Cheri) Ruliffson; grandchildren Brent (Megan) Nelson, Kyle Nelson, Lauren Nelson, Andrew Zuther, Paige Erbstoesser, McKenzie Zuther, Joseph Ruliffson and Benjamin Ruliffson; great-grandchildren Ivy, Eva and Ana Nelson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Judy Ruliffson, brother-in-law Russell Pauls along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Margaret and his brothers, Paul (Mary) and Ralph.
