Joan Carlson

   Joan Carlson, 78, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo.

   Joan was born on June 30, 1946 in Breckenridge, MN to Robert and Beatrice Hoffert. After her father’s death, her mother married Raymond Kummer who adopted her and her brother Jim.

   Joan attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in Nansen Township. She graduated from high school at North Central High School in Colfax, ND in 1964. Joan went on to attend NDSU and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science and home economics in 1968.

   Joan married Keith Carlson on July 15, 1967 at First Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wahpeton, ND.

   Joan and Keith made their home in rural Mooreton, ND where they welcomed their daughters Dawn and Heather. Joan taught home economics in Wahpeton and Wyndemere. Keith and Joan were very involved in the Democratic Party in North Dakota, District 25 in Richland County. Joan continued her involvement within the Democratic party, serving as the Vice Chairperson of the Democratic Party in North Dakota while running the motor vehicle branch in Wahpeton, ND.

   After moving to Fargo, she pursued a career in politics by working as the Eastern Field Director for U.S. Representative Earl Pomeroy until her retirement in 2011.

   Joan enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family lake home on Ottertail Lake in Minnesota.

   Joan is survived by her daughters, Dawn (Brian) Kieselbach, Dilworth, MN, and Heather (Jeff) Allickson, Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Taylor and Rylan Allickson, Fargo, ND; brother, Paul (Vanessa) Kummer, Colfax, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

   Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Carlson; parents, Robert Hoffert, Raymond and Beatrice Kummer; and her brother, Jim Kummer.

   Visitation: Friday, November 15, 2024, from 5-7 p.m., at West Funeral Home, West Fargo.

   Memorial Service: Saturday, November 16, at 11:00 a.m., in Lutheran Church of the Cross, West Fargo, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
