Irene Schons

   An intelligent and beautiful woman with a kind heart, Irene Iola Schons passed away March 26, 2023, at the age of 94.

   Irene was born November 24, 1928, to Clarence and Ima Laske. Growing up in Leonard, North Dakota, with her brothers Eugene, Wally, and Calvin. Irene survived polio as a child. As she grew, she was a piano player and soloist for church and family gatherings. After graduating as valedictorian of her class, she went on to attend teacher’s college.  She taught in a one room country school at age eighteen.

   Irene was married to her husband Jerome Schons for 66 years before he died. They met at a car show in Leonard, North Dakota, where Jerome was showing cars. He told his brother that he was going to marry that gal as soon as they met. They were blessed with four children. Through her example, she taught them to be kind. She put her family first and was always so accepting of everyone.

   Irene worked for several accounting firms as a bookkeeper. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, singing, and baking. She was a member of the Clio Club of Enderlin, North Dakota, and of the Methodist church, where she sang in the choir and was active in circle group. She loved “How Great Thou Art.” Irene enjoyed a good meal of chicken, cole slaw, and cookies, washed down with a hot cup of black coffee.

   Irene leaves behind her daughter Cheryl Jacobson, her daughter and son-in-law Laura and William Armstrong, her daughter and son-in-law Julie and Dennis Boyle, her son and daughter-in-law Mark and Donna Schons, ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and her brother Calvin Laske. She is reunited with her beloved husband Jerome Schons, her parents Clarence and Ima Laske, and her brothers Eugene Laske and Wally Laske. Irene’s family would like to thank Alameda Oaks Nursing Center and AADI Hospice for their compassionate care.

   Memorial Service: Saturday, July 15, 2023, at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service.

   Private Interment: Leonard Cemetery, Leonard, North Dakota.
