IlaVey Kickertz, 93, of Chaffee, N.D. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin, ND.
IlaVey was born on August 9, 1927 at McVille, ND to George and Ida (Pederson) Schmeck. She grew up on the family farm near Ayr, ND.
IlaVey graduated from Ayr High School in 1945. She attended Valley City State Teachers College and graduated in 1947 after which she accepted an elementary teaching position in Chaffee, ND. This is where she met the love of her life, Alfred R. Kickertz. She and Alfred were married on September 18, 1949 at Martin’s Lutheran Church, Casselton, ND. They resided at the family farm near Chaffee. She resumed teaching at Chaffee in 1967 and continued to teach for 25 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Valley City University in 1978. IlaVey and Alfred operated the family farm until his death in 1974.
After retiring from teaching IlaVey enjoyed traveling with family and friends in the United States, Canada, and Norway. She was involved in several community organizations including the Four Corners Senior Citizens, Chaffee Homemaker’s Club, and Chaffee Centennial Committee. As a member of the Goshen Moravian Church since 1949. She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship and Women’s Circle. IlaVey was a 4-H leader of the Chaffee-Ettes 4-H Club for many years. Ila Vey enjoyed visiting with her neighbors, friends, and family, and enjoyed music & her piano.
IlaVey is survived by: daughter Sharon (Gordon) Gerbig, Amidon, ND; daughter Marcia (Earl) Erdmann, Alice, ND; and son Daniel (Brenda) Kickertz, Rockford, IL. Grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Clay (Rachel) Erdmann, Ross (Melissa) Erdmann, Katie (Dan Vishnevetsky) Kickertz, Andrew (Aurelia) Kickertz, Danette (Richard) Holtz, Aaron (Yelena) Gerbig, and Miles (Jody) Gerbig. Great grandchildren Kelby, Teige, & Kirbie Erdmann, Dillan and Jolee Dahl, Grant & Jacob Erdmann, Ashley Berg, Alexis & Michael Holtz, Sage Gerbig, Skyler & Kennedy Gerbig. She is also survived by her sister Betty Ann Kappel.
IlaVey was preceded in death by her husband: Alfred, parents George and Ida Schmeck, and sister Lucille Brorby.
IlaVey resided at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin, ND since September 2015. The family would like to thank all the nurses, therapy workers, and all the caregivers at Maryhill Manor for the excellent care, great smiles and hugs given to IlaVey and everyone who provided care, support, and rides to IlaVey throughout these years.
Funeral Services: 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 6, 2021, Goshen Moravian Church rural Durbin, ND. The funeral will be live streamed on the Goshen Moravian Church Facebook Page also the service will be recorded and available Monday on her West Funeral Home web page.
Visitation: One hour before the service for family and friends.
Burial: Church Cemetery.
