Gregory Mallery, Retired MSGT Obituary

    Retired MGST Gregory J. Mallery passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his family after leaving the Fargo VA ICU family to join the Hospice family of Red River Valley.

   Greg was born on December 12, 1961, to Thomas and Margaret Mallery (Kentucky). Greg attended grade school at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Florence, Kentucky; he then graduated from Boone County High School in Florence, KY. He attended Thomas Moore College at which time he decided to join the United States Air Force.

   Greg entered the Air Force December 7th, 1983, and attended basic Military Training at Lackland air Force Base, Texas. After completing basic training, Greg remained at Lackland Air Force Base to complete his technical school training, M-60 machine gun specialist course and Air Force Base Defense Level I. His first assignment was to the 351st Security Police Squadron, Whiteman AFB, Missouri. He worked as an Entry Controller/Alarm Monitor and Fire team member. In August 1985, he was reassigned to the 8th Security Police Squadron, Kunsan AB, Republic of Korea and worked as a Response Force Member and Supply Clerk. In August 1986, he accepted orders to the 44th Security Police Squadron, Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota where he performed duties as a Fire Team Leader and later certified as an BISS Operator. In October 1987 he married A1C Donna M. Tomczak who was also assigned to the 44th Security Force Squadron. In December 1987, he was returned to the land of the Morning Calm, this time to the 51st Security Police Squadron, Osan AB, Republic of Korea and worked as a Response Force Leader and Alarm Monitor. In January 1988, he returned to Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota this time to the 28th Security Forces Squadron where he served as a Fire Team Leader and a BISS Operator. While stationed at Ellsworth AFB, the 28th Security Police Squadron became the 812th Security Police Group. In June 1994 after the last Nuclear Missile left Ellsworth AFB, he was selected to participate in Mighty Guardian 1. In July 1994 he accepted an assignment to the 347th Security Force Squadron Moody AFB, Georgia where he performed duties as Law Enforcement Desk Sergeant and Flight Chief. In October 1995 he deployed with the First Air Expeditionary Force to Bahrain. Within the next year he was deployed to Eskan Village, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia directly supporting and enforcing United Nations Resolutions. In 1997 while still assigned to the 347th he was hired as the Air Base Ground Defense trainer and established the READY and Selective Armed programs. In July 1999 he volunteered for the Voluntary Stabilized Base tour to Minot AFB, North Dakota. Upon arrival he was assigned to the 742nd Missile Squadron. In February 2000 he moved to the 91st Security Forces Squadron as a Security Escort Team Flight Chied. During his time there he held the positions of Flight Chief, and Senior Missile Field training instructor. He retired in 2005 at Minot AFB, North Dakota as the Operations Superintendent.

   Following his military career, he became an Assistant Manager for Wal-Mart in Bismarck ND for the next 6.5 years then stepping down to be and hourly associate for the next 10.5 years until present. He was also involved with The Knights of Columbus at Holy Cross Church in West Fargo and the West Fargo VFW Post #7564 Greg met the love of his life Donna while at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota; they married October 2, 1987. Greg and Donna had 2 children Brittny and Stephan. Greg enjoyed spending time with his family throughout the years; but most of all the time he spent with Donna traveling to Jamacia which was his favorite vacation as they traveled there 5 times over the years. Camping was the next joy in his life as it meant spending quality time with his family and meeting new friends along the way. Greg loved to ride bike, go hiking, take walks, and in recent years loved riding his side by side in The Paul Bunyan of Minnesota and the Black hills of South Dakota.

   In most recent weeks he loved spending time with his new puppy Kahlua. Along with his crazy grand-puppies Elmo, Colter, and Cody. Greg loved spending time with his 2 amazing grand-children Piper and Buckley Grossman who referred to him as "Papa". Greg is survived by his Beloved wife Donna Horace, ND, Brittny Mallery (Piper & Buckley Grossman) Horace, ND, Stephan Mallery (Macy Savela) Horace, ND. His Brothers and sisters Thomas (Vivian) Georgia, William (Linda) Kentucky, James (Erna) Kentucky, John (Adrian) Kentucky, Brenda Kentucky, Doug (Jennifer) Kentucky, Paula Kentucky, Jeff (Dawn) Kentucky and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. Sister-In-Law Michele Texas.

   Greg is proceeded in death by his grandparents William (Dorothy) Mallery, Maurice (Anne)Leahy, Father and Mother Thomas and Margerat Mallery, sister Marilyn and brother Paul, Father and Mother-in-law Thomas (Barbara)Tomczak.

  The family will be wearing Burgundy in support of Head and Neck Cancer from which Greg fought the battle in 2009 and has since lost the battle of the after cancer affects.

 

   Visitation: Thursday, September 29, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. with a time of sharing at 7:30 p.m. in West Funeral Home, West Fargo.

   Funeral Mass: Friday, September 30, at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Cross Catholic Church, West Fargo, with visitation one hour prior to the mass.

   Interment: Fargo National Cemetery, rural Harwood, N.D.
