It is very easy to put into words the kind of person Gordy was, and the impact he had on many peoples lives. Gordy cared deeply about his family, friends, and employees whom he considered family. Everyone who knew Gordy, knew he would be there for them if they needed a hand, emotionally or otherwise.
Gordy Ferkul, 65, West Fargo, ND passed away on August 31, 2021.
Gordon John Ferkul was born July 21, 1956 to John and Joan (Anzelc) Ferkul in Virginia, MN. He graduated from Roosevelt High School. He then attended Mesabi Community College and UMD afterwards where he received his business degree.
Gordy married Diane Kostrzewski in 1982. To this union in 1986, a son Ryan was born whom Gordy was very proud of.
Gordy and Annie were married January 23, 1995 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and from there on is where the adventures began. A daughter was born not soon after in August of 1997. Gordy was so proud and shed many tears when Caitlyn was born. Gordy loved children so much. He also loved golfing, the Vikings (he wasn’t a fair-weather fan), Dalvin Cook, whom he called “Cookie”, watching all sports, reading the sports page, and spending time with family and friends. Some of Gordy’s best times were spent at Camper’s Paradise in Nevis, MN. The other loves, pride, and joy of Gordy were his "untrained" dogs, Ivy (3), and London (1). Boy did he love his dogs even though he never had a dog growing up until he married Annie.
He started as a busboy at Bridgemans in Duluth, MN. He advanced to management; from there he took a manager position with Ground Round. Gordy was a general manager at O’Kellys in Fargo for 17 years followed by a general manager at Spitfire in West Fargo from 2006 through 2020. Gordy loved the customers and employees at Spitfire so very much and enjoyed his job more than anything.
Gordy liked to give fond nicknames to people he cared about, there were sometimes crazy nicknames, but they were so cute. Gordy loved music; 38 Special, Styx and Loverboy and boy did he enjoy seeing them in concert! So many good times!!
He is survived by his wife Annie; son Ryan Ness; daughter Caitlyn Ferkul; brothers Jon Ferkul and Mark Ferkul; uncle and aunt, Doc and Carol Dewhurst; his beloved "untrained" English cream golden retrievers, Ivy and London; mother-in-law Kathy Nichols; brothers-in-law, John and Jim Nichols; sister-in-law Diana Mohs and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; father-in-law Marsh Nichols and his beloved "untrained" English cream golden retrievers Megan, Brittany, and Sienna.
Gordy was a good friend to all, but a great friend to all he worked with. If you were an employee of Gordy and did your job, he always had your back. He loved his job and got great pleasure on those big days or weeks like Big Iron or any Bison games. If you were with Gordy out anywhere, he would introduce you as his best friend. He must have had 30 best friends……. maybe more. Treasure your family and friends, Gordy did, and we are thankful for that and we are so thankful for him.
The family would prefer memorials in lieu of flowers.
