He was raised on the family farm near Karlsruhe, ND, attended country school, and later the school at Drake, ND. With his dad working full time with the railroad, Gerald became responsible for the day-to-day operation of the farm at a young age, He also worked at the Drake Creamery and at the Great Northern Railroad depot in Rugby, ND. Gerald met and married the love of his life DeLilah Seefeld on Nov. 26, 1964. They made their home on the farm. Gerald later began his career in construction and the family followed his work living in Bagley, MN, Martin, SD, Fargo and settled in Mapleton, ND in 1970.
