George Waxler, 101, Mapleton, ND, died on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at St. Catherine’s South in Fargo, ND where he had resided since late June of this year.
George Albert Waxler was born November 15, 1923, at Mapleton, ND, to Harvey and Charlotte Waxler. He graduated from Mapleton High School. Except for a brief time at the Seattle shipyards during WWII, he spent his working life farming with his father and brother Fay.
On November 27, 1947, he married Mary Ann Odegard at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. They lived on the family farm where they raised two daughters.
After retiring from farming in the late 1980’s, George rented out the farmland and would assist neighbors during harvest. He was an enthusiastic gardener – but only if you could eat the result. No flowers allowed! He was always eager to share the bounty with friends and neighbors and for many years hosted a “potato digging party.” He also taught himself woodworking, which occupied him during the winter months. While he made several furniture pieces for their home, he most enjoyed making toys for the children of friends and relatives. He especially enjoyed designing and building cars and replicas of farm equipment.
George is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Waxler of Cottage Grove, MN; and Nancy (Greg) Holter of Richland, WA; a granddaughter Gretchen (David) Reeploeg of Richland, WA; grandson-in-law Jason Paine of Spokane, WA; great-grandchildren Isaiah and Ezra Paine and James and Grace Reeploeg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Mary Ann, his wife of 76 years; his parents; his brother Fay; and granddaughter Alissa Paine.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to HIA Hospice (formerly Hospice of the Red River Valley).
