Gary Nelson

Gary Joseph Nelson September 19, 1939 – May 28, 2026 

Gary Joseph Nelson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully in his home on May 28, 2026, at the age of 86. 

Gary’s story began on the family farm just outside of Casselton, North Dakota. He grew up in Fargo, graduating from Fargo Central High School before attending Concordia College. A talented athlete, Gary played both football and basketball for the Cobbers, graduating in 1961. But his greatest achievement during those years happened earlier: in 1959, he married the love of his life, Linda Joy Velline—a girl he had met at a 7th-grade school dance. Together, they shared a beautiful, marriage of 67 years. 

Gary lived a life of service to his community and the state of North Dakota. After an early stint with Standard Oil, he spent the majority of his working life on the family farm North of Casselton.  His political career began locally on the Casselton School Board and expanded to the state level, where he served with distinction for 24 years in the North Dakota Senate. His leadership and integrity led him to the role of Senate Majority Leader before his retirement from the Legislature in 2001. Gary continued his commitment to agriculture and public service as the North Dakota State FSA Director until his full retirement. 

In their retirement years, Gary and Linda found peace and happiness at their family lake home on Pelican Lake. There, Gary’s greatest joy was being with Linda, spending quiet mornings on the deck, wood turning, fishing, and reveling in the laughter and chaos of big family gatherings. 

Gary was preceded in death by his Parents, Gunnard and Agnes Nelson, Brothers, Duane Nelson (Jeanette), Ronald Nelson (Karen), Ardell Strom (Allen), Gerald Nelson, and infant son Michael Joseph. 

Gary leaves behind a rich legacy of love and leadership. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; his children, Joe Nelson (Karen Schaefer), Tim Nelson (Kathie), and Chris Gilbertson (Tad); his cherished grandchildren, Jessica (James), Jared (Jessica), Josh, Kyle (Kirin), Tyler, Jaimi (Blake Harmon), Jack, and Sydney; 7 deeply loved great-grandchildren, his sister Carole Nelson and many loved nieces and nephews.   

Services for Gary will be held at West Funeral Home, 321 Sheynne Street, West Fargo, ND  on June 12, at 11AM with visitation 1 hour before and a luncheon/open house following the service.
