Eva Vining Obituary

Eva Vining, 89, of rural Leonard, North Dakota, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Heather’s House (Hospice) in Fargo, ND.

Eva was born July 30, 1936, at Marcelin, Saskatchewan, Canada to Peter and Polly (Stupnikoff) Hromick. She grew up outside of Marcelin, in a rural area, attending school nearby to which she often arrived on horseback.

At age 14, Eva arrived in Chaffee for the first time while visiting her sister, Verna. It was then she met Jack, (John Vining) who would eventually become the love of her life. Eva and Jack married on May 11, 1954, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and soon returned to Chaffee.

Eva was a devoted farm wife and mother to Randy, Sherry, and Kim. She was deeply involved in her community, generously volunteering her time at St. Peter Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, as well as acting as the church librarian and treasurer.

Her lifelong love of nature and animals made rural life a perfect setting for Eva. She could be found working fields, tending to her flower gardens, mowing lawn and taking long walks in the country accompanied by her beloved dogs. The farm gave refuge to many animals where Eva took in vulnerable raccoons, bunnies, and kittens, nursing them back to health. She also fed numerous types of birds, becoming an expert on the various species.

Eva shared a love of travel with Jack, and you could often find them packing the car for another adventure. Many trips to Canada were taken, along with visits to the majority of states in the lower forty-eight as well as Alaska.

Eva is survived by children: Randy (Kathy) Vining, Sherry Vining, and Kim Malakowsky. She also leaves behind grandchildren: Natalia (Zach), Stephanie (Dave), and Bryan; great-grandchildren Dalice, Taylor, Amelia, and Ezra; and great-great-granddaughter Zariah.

Eva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; siblings, Peter Hromick and Verna Erdman; and son-in-law, Steve Malakowsky.

Memorial contributions can be made to Heather’s House (Hospice), Fargo, ND or to Cats Cradle, Fargo ND to honor her love of cats.
