Duane R. Bartholomay, age 97, of Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly Casselton, ND, died Monday, July 5, 2021, at Essentia Health – Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes.
Duane Raymond Bartholomay was born January 25, 1924, at Sheldon, ND, the son of Gustave and Maude (Noon) Bartholomay. He grew up at Sheldon and attended school there. He entered the US Army in 1945 and served during WWII along with four of his brothers and a sister, until his discharge in 1947.
On June 14, 1947, Duane was united in marriage to Muriel Thompson at Moorhead, MN. They lived in several ND communities prior to moving to Casselton in 1962. Duane retired from Burlington Northern in 1983, after a 36-year career. Duane and Muriel were able to spend 18 winters in Arizona. She died November 7, 2010.
Duane was a member of Casselton United Methodist Church and Cass County Wildlife Club. He loved the outdoors – greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. It was special when he could have grandchildren with him. He enjoyed all their school activities, especially their sports, and was always so proud of all of them.
He is survived by three children, Don (Terri), Glen Ellyn, IL, Chuck (Cathy), Bismarck, ND, and Judy (Jim Landry) Neil, Detroit Lakes, MN; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, John and Gordon, both of Fargo, ND.
Duane was preceded in death by his wife Muriel, and 11 siblings, Ervin, Richard, LaVern, Elsie, Eleanor, Fern, Meril, Norman, Virgil, Kenneth and Leo.
His family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the angels at Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes, and also those with Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Funeral Service: 10am Saturday, July 10, 2021 in West Funeral Home Chapel, West Fargo, with Visitation held one hour prior to his service.
