Donald Solberg Obituary

Don Solberg, a skydiving legend from West Fargo, ND, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Sanford Health West Campus in Fargo, ND at the age of 79.

Donald Joseph Solberg was born June 21, 1944 at Peoria, IL to Orvin and Roberta Solberg. The family moved to Hunter, ND, when he was very young, where they started a drug store. He graduated from high school there. Don worked for his parents while in school and began a quest to be a pharmacist himself. That was short lived and he continued schooling receiving a business accounting degree at Dakota Business College in Fargo where he found that he loved numbers and math and was very book smart. In 1968, he met Donna Redmann and they were married in 1969 in Fargo. They made their home in West Fargo where he worked at the stockyards as a bookkeeper/accountant for Montgomery and Sons until they closed. He continued working in facility maintenance at NDSU until retiring in 2014.

Don was a lifelong skydiver. He made his first jump at the age of 21 out of his dad's plane, threw up on the way down and fell in love with the sport (Don’s dad was a pilot as well as a pharmacist). Don founded Valley Skydivers (later named Skydive Fargo) and served as an instructor and mentor for many. He received many local awards and in 2016 a regional award for his dedication to the sport. He was a member of the United States Parachute Association since 1966 and the Parachute Over 40 Club. He made his final jump at the age of 70.

Don loved to visit and spend time at the airport. He also raised white German Shepherd dogs for a time. His passion for skydiving was only short of his love for his wife and daughter.  Don shared a love for music as well, often going to see Garth Brooks, George Strait and also shared his daughter's love for Miranda Lambert and her music, tagging along to a few shows of hers over the past 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of 54 years; daughter, Megean Solberg (Travis McLeod); and a sister, Annette Bach.

He will be missed immensely by his wife and daughter. Megean would like to thank her Dad for the incredible life he gave her and his love that will live on in her heart until they meet again.

Visitation: Friday, March 1, 2024 from 6 to 8 with a prayer service at 8 PM at the West Funeral Home, West Fargo.

Celebration of Don’s Life: Saturday, March 2 starting at 11 AM at the West Fargo Airport (1040 19th Ave. NW) Hanger #8 with visitation one hour prior and a reception following. There will be a shuttle running from Bonanzaville - West Parking lot to the West Fargo Airport from 10 to 5 (attendees are encouraged to use the shuttle due to limited parking at the airport).

Don's wife Donna and daughter Megean would like to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley, especially Shannon & Jerry, for their care.    Also, special thanks to Laura Flynn of Senior Helpers who was Don's primary caregiver for over a year.
