Donald Grant Obituary

Donald J. Grant, 87, passed away at the Fargo VA Hospital on Saturday, July 20, 2024, with family by his side.

Don was born Feb. 5, 1937, to Lyle and Dorothy (Garske) Grant. He was the oldest of 8 children. He grew up in the Golden Ridge neighborhood. Don went to Fargo schools and then enlisted in the US Air Force at the age of 17 in 1954. In Sept. 1955, he married Doris Sorenson, and they had three sons, Jeff, Chris and Greg. After the service, Don worked at NDSU in the Plant Pathology Department. He then married Ardyce Dahlen in 1966. They had a daughter, Brenda. Don then started his driving career in the early 1970’s. He drove semis until 1977. He married Lynn McArthur in 1984. Having driven through many blizzards over his career, he decided to downsize. He began his new job driving senior bus and then vans for Cass County until his retirement of 25 years in 2022.

Don loved all kinds of sports. He pitched fast pitch softball for many years. He enjoyed bowling with family and friends in different leagues and Thanksgiving Turkey Shoots. He especially loved playing golf. He would never play for “nothing”, always had to play for “something”.  He loved a good western or movies on tv and cheered on the MN Twins and Vikings.  He also loved NDSU football and basketball plus watching golf tournaments.

Don was fortunate to share his later years with two special women. The first one was Marilyn Nygard until she passed away in 2021. The second is Marilyn Jensen for the past two years. She has been an important friend who spent many hours with Don while he was at the VA. They loved their casino trips and in May, their last trip to Deadwood, SD.

Don is survived by his sons, Jeff (Judy) Fargo, Chris, Fargo and Greg (Darcy), Mapleton; grandchildren, Alex (Sarah) Kraft, Fargo, Andrew Kraft, Fargo, Brandi Grant, Fargo and Pressley Hagen, Moorhead; brothers, Jerry, St. Paul, MN, Richard (Deb), Fargo and Brad (Judy), Audubon, MN; sisters, Sharon (Warren) Sunde, Glyndon, MN and Janet Wittmier, Moorhead, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Dorothy Grant; daughter, Brenda Kraft; sisters, Shirley Beckett and Beverly Okke; sister-in-law, Karen Grant; brothers-in-law, Bud Beckett and Walter Okke.

Don’s family is so thankful for all the wonderful care he received while at the Fargo VA and express their gratitude for all the support during this time. In honor of Don, please wear casual or golf attire to his visitation.
