Donald Gill Obituary

Donald H. Gill, 81, Casselton, ND passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at Bethany Retirement Center, Fargo, ND.

Donald Henry Gill was born in St. Joseph, MN on March 17, 1939 to Joseph and Gertrude (Wolney) Gill.  Don was the 6th of 13 children and spent his childhood working on the family farm.  After completing 8th grade, Don went on to continue working and farming both on the family farm and at other local farms in the St. Joe area.  As he got older, he spent summers traveling to ND to farm for the Baumler family of Wheatland, ND.  Don was drafted into the Army in December of 1961 and spent 2 years active duty.  He completed training in Colorado, Texas, and in Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Don met the love of his life, Veronica Schwegel, in November, 1959.  Don and Veronica courted through his years in the service and married on May 5, 1964.  They moved to Casselton, ND just two days following their wedding.  A week after that, Don began his career for Sinner Brothers and Bresnahan.  He worked there as the jack of all trades until his retirement in 2008, after 44 years of dedicated service to the business.

Together, Don and Veronica had 4 children all of whom they raised in the Casselton area.  Donald was known for his laid-back ways, and his ability to get things done in a pinch.  He spent hours driving tractor, combine, and beat lifter, and loved to tinker.  After his retirement, he became fond of his chihuahua, Chico, and they spent their days riding in the doodlebug and snoozing in the chair while the TV blared RFDTV.  He was a ruthless card player, and would not hesitate to kick your butt, regardless of your age.  But he did it was a smirk on his face, and a twinkle in his eye.  He had such a beautiful smile, and he will be so deeply missed.

Donald is survived by his beautiful wife Veronica, of Casselton, children: Linda (Brian) Roy, of Wheatland, ND, Carla Gill, of Alexandria, MN, Peter (Kristie) Gill, of Blair, WI, and Mary (Robert) Wieers, of West Fargo, ND, grandchildren: Joshua Roy, ReBecka (Zack) Wohl, Brandon (Justeena) Roy, McKenzie Gill, Hailey Gill, Alissa (Hunter) Babich, Adam Gill, and Kory Gill, great-grandchildren: Rylee and Taylor Wohl, Justin, Oliveea, Andrew, and Levi Roy.  Other survivors include his brothers: Ted (Joan) Gill, James (Celina) Gill, and Michael (Arleen) Gill, sisters: Marie Winter, Margie (Al) Kalla, Alma (Arnie) Nietfeld, and Donna (Jerome) Karls, along with sisters-in-law: Ethel Gill and Liz Gill.

Donald was preceded in death by his son Andrew Gill, parents, siblings: Herbert Gill, Ervie and Marlene Gill, Eileen and Casper Capser, David Winter, Joseph Gill, Ann Gill, Eugene Gill, and Albert and Rosie Gill.

Memorial service will be Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Casselton with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow at St. Leo’s Catholic Cemetery with military rites.
