Dewey Salter, 94, West Fargo, ND, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024, at Pioneer House Assisted Living in Fargo, surrounded by family.
Dewey was born July 6, 1929, in Grafton, ND to William and Clara (Olson) Salter. He attended grade school in Grafton before moving to Grand Forks as a teenager. Dewey embarked on a journey of service, joining the US Army and serving in South Korea. Upon his honorable discharge, Dewey pursued education at Aakers Business College in Grand Forks where he met his future wife, Kay Scott. Dewey and Kay married on July 14, 1950, in Crookston, MN. The couple made their home in West Fargo where they lovingly raised 4 children. In 1992, they began a new chapter by moving to Leek Lake near Vergas, MN eventually returning to West Fargo.
Dewey worked for Union Stockyards in West Fargo as a timekeeper and yardman until retirement. After moving to the lake, he enjoyed driving a courtesy car for Bill Schwartz Ford in Detroit Lakes.
Dewey was a member of the West Fargo VFW. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Wild & NDSU Bison. He loved being at the lake and taking care of his yard. Two things that brought him the most joy were visiting with family and friends and watching the various birds that frequented his bird feeder. He cherished the moments spent at Memory Cafe, where he relished taking part in their various events and activities and socializing with the friends he had made.
His faith in Jesus was of utmost importance to him. For several years, he played host to a Bible study gathering in his home, which he continued after relocating to Pioneer House. As time went by, he saw the group flourish as more people joined.
Dewey loved fish frys, picnics in his backyard, and Sunday night Lawrence Welk with Mary Lou Metzger. If you ever wanted to get Dewey out of the house, you just needed to say the magic words, "Dairy Queen." Dewey will be remembered most for his good sense of humor, compassion for others, and his hugs. His wit and humor never left him, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by four children, Greg (Terry), Nancy (Cliff) Bjornstad, Shelley (Paul) Rice, and Todd (Joanne); 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Dorothy Archiletti and Lavonne Wefel.
Dewey was preceded in death by his wife, Kay, and brothers, Lawrence and Allan Rosendahl.
Memorial Service: Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Pioneer House Chapel, Fargo, ND with visitation one hour prior.
