Daniel Backstrom, 93, of Fargo, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at Rosewood on Broadway in Fargo.
Daniel Raymond Backstrom was born December 24th, 1926, in Fargo, the son of David and Anna (Bakken) Backstrom. He was raised on the family farm near Prosper, ND. Daniel attended school in Prosper through 8th grade, before attending Fargo Central High School and graduating in 1944 from Mapleton High School. Following high school, he played amateur baseball for Prosper and farmed. On October 20, 1951, Daniel married Pearl Rensvold in Fargo. Pearl and Daniel moved to a farmstead in Grandin, ND in 1956, where he continued farming and helped raise their three children. Daniel retired from farming in 1987, moving to Fargo with Pearl. Daniel continued to help with the spring planting season before leaving every June in his camper to travel and take photographs. He would return every August to assist with the harvest until he was 80 years old.
His hobbies included traveling, photography and he was an avid reader, especially about American history. He journeyed to Alaska on four separate occasions and followed the Lewis and Clarke Trail, digesting its rich history through his love of photography and literature.
Daniel and Pearl were avid fans of NDSU basketball and football, attending many games over the years. They were members of NDSU Team Makers since 1976. Daniel also drove in a Wagon Train from south of Fargo to Bismarck during the Centennial. He also enjoyed running and participated in several marathons around Fargo into his late 70’s.
Daniel was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Grandin and Immanuel Lutheran Church after moving to Fargo. He was strong in his faith and in his relationship with God. Dan cherished time spent with family and friends - he will be greatly missed by all.
