Conrad Garhofer, age 93, of West Fargo, ND, died Friday, February 19, 2021, at Essentia Health, Fargo.
Conrad Michael Garhofer was born on January 11, 1928, on his family farm near Sykeston, ND, the oldest of 5 children. He went to school at Sykeston Public School, but after the 7th grade, began to work full time on the family farm to help his father.
In February of 1946, Conrad enlisted in the US Army. He served in the Philippines and was a part of the occupation forces in Japan. Following his discharge, he was the owner of Red Owl Grocery and then was the owner operator of Standard Oil Agency, both in Sykeston. Conrad married Maryanne Schaack in Sykeston on October 30, 1950.
Conrad moved to Fargo in the late 1970s and worked for E. W. Wylie as a truck driver, followed by working for Star Fireworks. Conrad married Evangeline Hertel August 13, 1992, in Moorhead, MN. After Conrad “retired”, they both began working as seamstress for Halberstadt’s in Fargo. He retired again…to work for Green View at the Moorhead I-94 rest area.
He was a member of the American Legion, was a life member of the VFW, and was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Sykeston.
Conrad always had sayings and nicknames for everybody. He could carry a room or event all by himself. He was the “big brother” that his siblings needed and were glad to have. Once somebody met Conrad he was never forgotten. He was a great man and true friend. Conrad never had a discouraging word about anyone and was an honest and generous man.
He is survived by his wife Evan Garhofer of West Fargo; children: Debra (Fred) Richter, Sykeston, Neal (Liza) Garhofer, Seaside, OR, Gloria (Walter) Cruchet, Las Vegas, NV, Brad Hertel, West Fargo; 14 grandchildren: Michelle Cruchet, Shawn Cruchet, Jason Hertel, Justin Hertel, Jeanette Hadley, Kara Shakya, Jessica Bichler, Joshua Garhofer, Taylor Garhofer, Hannah Garhofer, Sam Richter, Jena Garhofer, Annaka Garhofer, Jordyn Garhofer; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings Regina (Leo) Perkins, Fowlerville, MI, Agatha Strauss, Ham Lake, MN, Bernard (Clare Mae) Garhofer, Minneapolis, MN, and Frank Garhofer, St. Paul, MN.
