Clifford "Sonny" South

Clifford LeRoy South Jr. "Sonny" of Casselton ND died Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in his home surrounded by family.

Sonny was born July 21, 1947, in Longview, WA, the second son of Clifford and Ellen South Sr.  He completed his GED prior to enlisting in the Army on October 15, 1964.  There he held the rank of Specialist Private E5 Markman.  He was granted an early honorable discharge after returning from overseas during the war, on September 27, 1967.

On December 19, 1969, he married Jo Dunkelberger, his best friend, partner and love of his life.  They raised three children in the Casselton, ND area.

Sonny was best known for his love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping and taxidermy work.

He is survived by his three children; daughter Mellissa "Missi" (Terry Gustin) South of Missouri Valley, IA; son Jerry (Jennifer) South of West Fargo, ND; daughter Dawn South of Fargo, ND; Grandchildren Jacob (Shelby) Gustin, Courtney South, Matthew South, Caitlin South and Ben (Madisin) South; two great grandchildren, Elliott Gustin and Brandon Gustin, 1 brother and 1 sister.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, his wife whom he referred to as "My Bride Joey" and three of his brothers.
