Cecil Thompson Obituary

Cecil (Cec) E. Thompson, age 92, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 9th, 2026, at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo, ND.

He was born May 5th, 1934, in Erie, ND, a son of the late Jesse Thompson and Hazel (Birch) Thompson. He grew up in Casselton, ND and graduated from Casselton High School.

He went to work for Northern Pacific Railroad as a machine operator, laying and repairing track. Cec loved the outdoors and working with his hands. He had the opportunity to travel all over the country, which sparked his fascination for seeing new places and igniting his strong sense of adventure. After a long career on the railroad, Cec started a career with Red Owl in West Fargo, ND, working in the warehouse. Later, he worked for the Fargo School District as a custodian, retiring in 2000.

Cec had a passion for woodworking, creating handcrafted furniture for many of his friends and family members. Many of those well-made pieces still adorn their households. He also enjoyed gardening and spending time at his lake cabin on Lake Eunice near Audubon, MN.

Cec will be remembered for his hard-working, no-nonsense attitude. He had a dry sense of humor and a sharp wit, laden with fantastic one liners. Conversations with Cec were never dull and he had a unique perspective on many topics. Discussions with Cec were sure to be entertaining. They will be greatly missed.

Cec was also a horse lover. He owned a horse named Triple Socks for a few years and rode him regularly. He also shared his passion for riding with friends and family, providing them many opportunities to head out on the trail with him. Many great memories were created with Cec on those trail rides.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Levi, Lloyd, and Jesse as well as sisters Florence, Lorraine, and Eunice; nieces and nephews Karen (Donald) Maves, Lois Peterson Waite, Leslie Peterson, Ronald Peterson, Jesse Thompson, Cindy (Steve) Thompson Kinney, Terry (Kathy) Thompson. Also, his dear friend, Rod Farrell.

Cec is survived by nieces Sandra Johnson, Kimberly (Gary) Frieler, Roberta Mattram, Susan (Gary) Curfman, Marsha, Martha, Mary, and Marlene Peterson. Also, nephews Gary (Pam) Johnson, Jerry (Kathryn) Thompson, Don Thompson, Robert Porter, Gary (Shirley) Peterson, and Martin Peterson.

He also leaves behind very dear friends, Soni and Dan Dillon, Tami Farrell, her children Ian, Drew (Lauren), Paige (Jarred), Todd and Cindy Farrell, their children Lindsay and Sami, Brett and Laura Farrell, and their children Zander and Alivia who will all deeply miss him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Cecil’s memory to Ethos Hospice Service, 3361 45th St S. Suite 100 Fargo, ND, 58104 or Bethany on 42nd, 4255 30th Ave S. Fargo, ND, 58104.
