Betty Hersch Obituary

Betty Jane Hersch passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2023 under the care of Ethos Hospice at Bethany after a brief but fierce battle for her life.

Betty was born May 23, 1935, in Fargo, ND to Amos and Alice (Mallow). On 9/15/1956, Betty was joined in marriage with Ray Hersch, and they went on to have 5 boys. In addition to farm wife and mother duties, she enjoyed her work in town over the years where she was able to chat with many people who became her friends.

If you met Betty even once, you would know she was the kindest soul. Beloved by friends and neighbors alike, she enjoyed exchanging letters with those who were no longer nearby. If you ever received a card or letter from Betty, you can bet it ended with some gripe about the weather, and an update on her garden.
Although not a house pet person, she always left scraps of food out for the farm cats, and even once took in a batch of kittens. She occasionally would allow a visitor’s dog to come into the house, and then would sneak them as many treats as possible before getting caught.

Betty cooked and baked the most delicious things, all of which were magically calorie free. Her vegetable soup, lasagna, and cookies will be dearly missed.
A big sports fan, Betty would keep track of her favorite teams’ scores on her kitchen calendar. You could always count on knowing the Vikings, Bison, and Twins scoring records by looking on the fridge.

In 2019, Betty left the old farmstead and made her new home in an apartment in Casselton, where she enjoyed visits and coffee in the puzzle room with neighbors, reuniting with old friends, and making new friends.

Her incredible memory, loving spirit, and stuffing recipe will be carried on through her sons Larry Hersch (Hunter), Jeff Hersch (Fargo), and Kevin Hersch (Casselton), as well as beloved grandchildren Maria Hersch (West Fargo) and Matt Hersch (Fargo). She was a cherished aunt, cousin, and friend to many as well.

Betty was welcomed to the next chapter by her husband Ray, beloved sons Scott and Curt, her parents, siblings, daughter in law Darla Hersch (Larry) and many other loved ones. We will all miss her immensely.

Celebration of Life will be held this spring in Casselton.

In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation to The Hersch Family c/o Jeff Hersch 4263 39th Ave S, Fargo, ND 58104 for Betty's final expenses. Any donations above and beyond these expenses will be donated to Ethos Hospice, who we couldn't have gone on this journey without.
